Opoponax — also known as sweet myrrh — is a natural resin extracted from Commiphora erythraea, a plant of the Burseraceae family native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In artistic perfumery, it is considered one of the most precious and fascinating ingredients: it is obtained by incising the bark, from which a dense and fragrant resin slowly flows, later dried into amber “tears”.
Its olfactory profile is rich and complex: sweet, balsamic, with nuances of incense, wild vanilla and an almost animalic undertone that gives it a deep and ancient sensuality. For this reason, in the tradition of fine perfumery, opoponax is often associated with the amber and oriental families, where it plays a structural role: it does not simply add scent, but envelops and enhances all the other notes, giving warmth, persistence and that characteristic three-dimensionality that distinguishes a great niche fragrance from an ordinary perfume.
